About

The main job of Courtworkers is to help Indigenous people in contact with the law. However, they also play an important and expanding role in their communities.

  • Courtworkers can explain to the family of an accused person or to the Indigenous community the nature and meaning of the legal steps being taken against an accused person.
  • Courtworkers can conduct public legal education workshops for the Indigenous community.
  • Courtworkers can aid in the development of preventative programs, especially youth programs, to reduce the rate of crime in their communities.
  • Courtworkers can serve as resource people in training sessions for justice system employees, to help them better understand the culture, needs and aspirations of Indigenous people.
